Head Characteristics

The fossas head resembles a mongoose and a cat mashed together to make a whole new animal. Like a platypus, half beaver and duck, but the fossa makes it look more natural.  The fossa has round ears like a mongoose, and a snout that looks like a mongoose and a cat mix. The wiskers look like a cats wiskers, and eyes are cat-like because of the way they look and the way they function.

Body Characteristics

Fossas have a strong, muscular body, similar to a cougar.  The body length for males is up to 31 inches (80 centimeters).  The body length for females is up to 27 inches (70 centimeters).  The fossas fur is short and usually well groomed, and the color of their fur changes as they grow older.  The weight of the fossa can go from 11 pounds, to 22 pounds, all depending if it’s a male or female.  The tail of the fossa is almost the same length as the body, about 26-35 inches (65-90 centimeters).  The tail really helps balance for climbing trees and jumping from tree to tree.  Their feet are hairless and padded so they can get a good grip on the trees, and in case you didn’t know, they love climbing.  The fossa is perfect for climbing, especially since they have semi-retractable claws and flexible ankles which help them climb and jump from the trees.

Similar characteristics of the Fossa and Other Animals

The fossa resembles many other creatures, for example, the ears. The ears look like they are from a mongoose, and the fossa is somehow related to the mongoose, it’s their closest ancestor.  Also the snout is mongoose like, but at the same time, it has a bit of cat likeness in it.  The fossa also has a body like a small cougar, its wiskers, and the eyes resemble cat eyes. There are a lot of cat/mongoose traits in this animal.
